Welcome to the Class

5 September 2006

Glad you could make it!

This class is about exploring the world of occupational therapy and the devices and tools that are used to aid people. During the next few weeks you will be exposed to several institutions specializing in different areas of rehabilition therapy and the various challenges and abilities of each patient. Many devices already exist in the occupational therapy world but what’s really exciting is the overlap that ITP has with the existing assistive technology industry. Since most devices stem from the simple switch that are taught in Intro. to Physical Computing, ITP has the added benefit of its creative nature. But what makes this class different than most is that it is co-taught with the Occupational Therapy Dept. of NYU and their students who are studying OT or working in the field. These students expose us to the world they work in, often inviting us to the medical center they work at and ITP is finally off the fourth floor. Can you believe it? A project that leaves the floor?

Together the Rehabilitation, OT & ITP students will create devices and software systems that explore new ways to design and engage people who require assistive technology.

This is going to be a lot of fun and hard work!! I’m getting excited already.
